Beware of Door to Door
Magazine Sales
Last year the Police Department received numerous
complaints of people selling magazine subscriptions door
to door without permits. We responded whenever necessary
and took corrective measures.
Most of these people were on foot, in subdivisions,
usually working in pairs. Many claimed to be college
students selling magazine subscriptions to win trips out
of the country. Others claimed to live in the
subdivision and would use the names of previous
purchasers as if they knew the purchasers personally. In
most cases they were described as very pushy and
suspicious.
While researching door to door magazine sales on the
internet, we found a few disturbing facts. According to
the Better Business Bureau, magazine publishers
generally do not approve of their products being sold
door to door. We also managed to find eleven alias names
used by one unscrupulous door to door sales company. A
citizen's watch group warned that his company returned
to their area on several occasions using different
names, and did not deliver the subscriptions sold.
If an uninvited sales person visits you, call the Police
Department or the Village Hall. A list of all properly
registered sales people is maintained at the Village
Hall.
